Uma invenção chamada Brasil: os intérpretes e a busca pela identidade nacional

Abstract

O presente trabalho é um esforço para compreender as interpretações clássicas sobre o Brasil, analisando três obras fundamentais das décadas de 1930 e 1950: Casa-Grande & Senzala, de Gilberto Freyre; Raízes do Brasil, de Sérgio Buarque de Holanda; e Formação da Literatura Brasileira: Momentos Decisivos, de Antonio Candido. Através dessas obras, foi realizado um estudo bibliográfico com o objetivo de verificar se os autores contribuíram para a invenção de uma tradição brasileira e para a construção de uma identidade nacional. Quanto ao método, este trabalho consiste em uma revisão bibliográfica, especificamente uma revisão sistemática da literatura, que inclui a leitura integral das três obras e de seus principais comentaristas. Com a leitura das obras, foi possível observar o esforço analítico desses intelectuais para compreender as principais características nacionais. Cada autor, a partir de sua área - Antropologia, Sociologia e Literatura - buscou uma interpretação que superou os estudos realizados até então. No decorrer deste trabalho, conclui-se que esses autores enxergam o Brasil de um modo sui generis, sugerindo não apenas uma interpretação, mas uma “invenção” do país, conforme o conceito de “tradição inventada” proposto pelo historiador inglês Eric Hobsbawm. Assim, o trabalho argumenta que Freyre, Buarque e Candido não apenas interpretam o Brasil, mas o inventam, criando uma narrativa única e singular de identidade nacional.

This paper is an effort to understand classical interpretations of Brazil by analyzing three fundamental works from the 1930s and 1950s: Casa-Grande & Senzala by Gilberto Freyre, Raízes do Brasil by Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, and Formação da Literatura Brasileira: Momentos Decisivos by Antonio Candido. Through these works, a bibliographic study was conducted to determine whether these authors contributed to the invention of a Brazilian tradition and the construction of a national identity. Regarding the method, this study consists of a bibliographic review, specifically a systematic literature review, which includes a comprehensive reading of the three works and their main commentators. Through the reading of these works, it was possible to observe the analytical effort of these intellectuals to understand the main national characteristics. Each author, from their respective field— Anthropology, Sociology, and Literature—sought an interpretation that surpassed previous studies. In the course of this work, it is concluded that these authors view Brazil in a sui generis manner, suggesting not only an interpretation but an “invention” of the country, in accordance with the concept of “invented tradition” proposed by the English historian Eric Hobsbawm. Thus, the work argues that Freyre, Buarque, and Candido do not merely interpret Brazil but invent it, creating a unique and singular narrative of national identity.
